IBAN BIC Service

What is the purpose of the IBAN BIC Service?
The IBAN BIC Service is a temporary service to support the migration in the Netherlands to the use of European payment products. You can use the IBAN BIC Service to find IBAN and BIC codes for existing Dutch account numbers.
Do I have to use this website to request my IBAN and BIC?

You can find the IBAN and BIC of your own account numbers on your bank statements.

To request the IBAN and BIC of existing Dutch account numbers, you can also use the text or telephone service in addition to this website:

  • Send a text with the account number to 4226
  • Call 0900-4226242 and follow the instructions

Do I have to use this website to request an IBAN or BIC?

No. You can also ask the payee for the IBAN and BIC. This will often be shown on an invoice.

Why do I need an IBAN and BIC?
In a few years’ time, a distinction will no longer be made in Europe between domestic and cross-border payments. From now on, you will have to use an international bank account number (the IBAN) and a bank identifier code (the BIC) for all payment transactions.
What is IBAN?
IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. The IBAN of Dutch bank account numbers consists of 18 characters (digits and letters). For example: The IBAN of account number 123456789 at Rabobank is: NL44 RABO 0123 4567 89.
What is BIC?
BIC stands for Bank Identifier Code (BIC). The BIC is the international identification code of a bank of 8 or 11 characters. Each bank has its own unique code. Rabobank’s BIC8 is RABONL2U.
How does the IBAN BIC Service work?

To request the IBAN and BIC of one or more Dutch account numbers, enter an account number in the IBAN BIC Check section of the website. The IBAN and BIC will then appear. Do you need the IBAN and BIC of a large number of account numbers? Register via the website as a user of the IBAN BIC MultiChecker.

You can also use the text or telephone service. The telephone service is available on 0900-42 26 242. For the text service, send a text to 4226, and you will be sent a text with the IBAN and BIC.

Does the IBAN BIC Service work for account numbers of all banks?

Yes, via the IBAN BIC Service you can request the IBAN and BIC of existing Dutch bankaccount numbers for all banks based in the Netherlands.

A similar service exists for retrieving IBAN and BIC related to non-Dutch bank account numbers. These can be found on the website of the European Payments Council .

Does the IBAN BIC Service also offer an online/real time service to obtain the IBAN and BIC of account numbers in an automated way, for instance via a web service?
No, the IBAN BIC Service is only a temporary service to support the migration in the Neherlands to the use of European payment products; not for the continuous enrichment of payment instructions. The service offers you as a consumer, company and/or institution therefore the possibility to complete your own administration files with the IBAN and BIC.

Who is the initiator of the IBAN BIC Service?
Stichting IBAN Service NL. The foundation was established on the initiative of the Dutch banks.

IBAN BIC Check

What is the IBAN BIC Check?
You can use the IBAN BIC Check to request the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and the Bank Identifier Code (BIC) of an existing Dutch account number. Enter an account number and click on Submit. The IBAN and BIC of the account number will appear on the screen.
Why don’t the IBAN and BIC appear?
There are various reasons why the IBAN and BIC do not appear for an account number you have entered:
  • The account number is not in use or doesn’t exist.
  • The entry is incorrect (more than ten digits, contains letters, spaces or symbols, etc.).
  • The service is temporarily unavailable.
Do I need to enter a P for former Postbank account numbers?
You can enter a P in the IBAN BIC Check, but you don’t have to. You cannot use a P for the IBAN BIC MultiChecker.

IBAN BIC MultiChecker

What is the IBAN BIC MultiChecker?
Use the IBAN BIC MultiChecker on this website if you need the IBAN and BIC for a large number of existing Dutch account number in one file at the same time. On working days, you can download the file containing IBAN and BIC within 24 hours.
What is the target group for the IBAN BIC MultiChecker?
The IBAN BIC MultiChecker is intended for all companies, associations and foundations that want to find out the IBAN and the BIC of a large number of existing Dutch account numbers in one file at the same time. The IBAN and BIC can be requested for up to 1,000,000 account numbers in one file at the same time.
Why can’t I use the IBAN BIC MultiChecker?
To use the IBAN BIC MultiChecker you need to register as a user first. When you register, you must enter your Chamber of Commerce number.
Is the Chamber of Commerce number mandatory for registration?
Yes. The IBAN BIC MultiChecker is intended for business users. To register as a user of the IBAN BIC MultiChecker, you therefore need to enter your Chamber of Commerce number. If your company is not yet registered with the Chamber of Commerce, you must register before you can use this service.
I keep getting an error message when I try to send my file. What should I do?
There are various reasons for this.
  • You are trying to send a file that is not a CSV file (*.csv) or Excel file (*.xls). The IBAN BIC MultiChecker only supports CSV and Excel files.
  • The IBAN BIC Service only supports Excel files from Excel 97 version onwards. Files stored in Microsoft Excel 97 – Excel 2003 & 5.0/95 work folder are not accepted.
  • There may be some incorrect account numbers in the file, for example with more than ten digits or with alphanumerical symbols (letters, spaces, decimal points, etc.).
  • The file may contain incorrect reference numbers, for example, more than 20 symbols.
  • As a user, you may have had the maximum number of files updated. Your limit has been reached.
What is a CSV file?

A CSV file is a file that consists of text data only, with values separated by a comma. CSV stands for Comma Separated Values.

You can open a CSV file using Excel. For more information, consult the Excel manual or help function.

What is the format of the file?
Consult the User instructions to create a file.

Registration

Why should I register?

To be able to use the IBAN BIC MultiChecker.

Another reason for registering your info is to ensure that unauthorised persons cannot access your files.

How does the registration process work?

If you wish to use the IBAN BIC MultiChecker, you simply need to enter your info on the registration page and click on Submit. You will receive a confirmation e-mail within a few minutes. The e-mail contains a link. If you click on this link, you will activate your registration.

If you have an registration with more than 1.000.000 existing Dutch account numbers for which you need the IBAN and BIC, it may be worthwhile becoming a premium user. You will be charged for this service. For more information, see the terms and conditions. Once you have registered as a user, you can use the IBAN BIC MultiChecker straight away. After you have registered as a premium user, you will be contacted within two working days to go through the contract procedure and your log-in data.

The written contract will then be sent to you, You need to sign and return the contract. Once your info has been registered, your registration will be activated and you can use the IBAN BIC MultiChecker as a premium user.

What happens to my info?
Any info you enter on this website will be treated with the strictest confidence. One of the reasons why you need to register your info is to prevent unauthorised persons from accessing your files. Your personal details will not be used for any other purposes.
Why do I need a Chamber of Commerce number?
The IBAN BIC MultiChecker is intended for business users such as companies, associations and foundations. The Chamber of Commerce number is a number under which a company is registered in the Trade Register.
I’ve sent my info, but I haven’t received a confirmation e-mail. What should I do?
If you don’t receive a confirmation e-mail within a few minutes, contact us via the contact page.
I’ve forgotten to activate my registration. What should I do?

The confirmation e-mail contains a link. If you click on this link, your registration is activated. Registration can be activated up to seven days after receipt.

After seven days, registration is removed. To gain access to the service, you can re-register.

Logging in

I’ve forgotten my password. What should I do?
Go to Log-in and click on Forgotten password. Enter your e-mail address and you will be sent a new activation e-mail with a link. If you click on the link, your new password will be activated.
My registration is blocked. What should I do?

Your registration will be blocked if you enter an incorrect password five times.

Go to Log-in and click on Forgotten password. Enter your e-mail address and you will be sent a new activation e-mail with a link. If you click on the link, your new password will be activated.

Why do I need to be sent an access code by text message every time I log in as a premium user?
Every time you log in as a premium user, you will be asked for an access code as an extra security measure. This is an additional confirmation that the person logging in is in fact the person registered as a user.
I am a premium user and I haven’t received a text yet. What should I do?

Click on cancel or log in again. You will then be sent a new text with access code.

Click on cancel or log in again. You will be sent another access code by text.
I am a premium user and my access code has expired. What should I do?

Text service

How does the text service of the IBAN BIC Service work?

Send a text with the Dutch account number for which you require the IBAN and the BIC to 4226. You will receive a text with the IBAN and the BIC of that account number.

You will be charged EUR 0.25 for each text message plus the costs of using your mobile phone.

Telephone service

How does the telephone service of the IBAN BIC Service work?

The IBAN BIC Service is available by dialling 0900-IBANBIC or 0900-4226242 (local rate).

A menu will appear. Follow the telephone instructions. After keying in an existing Dutch account number, the IBAN and BIC will be read out to you within a few seconds. If you use your mobile, the IBAN and the BIC can be sent to you by text.

You will be charged EUR 0.25 for each text message plus the costs of using your mobile phone.

System requirements

What are the system requirements for the IBAN BIC MultiChecker?

Browser:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 onwards
  • Firefox 2

Internet access:
Minimum dial-up connection of 64 Kb/s. For larger files, 1024 Kb/s or a broadband connection is recommended (ADSL, cable or similar).

E-mail address:
Access to a personal e-mail account to receive e-mails relating to your registration and to send and receive files.

Screen resolution:
For optimum use, a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 is recommended.

My Info

I want to change my e-mail address. How do I go about it?

Go to My Info.

By clicking on the pencil, you can amend your data. Once you have changed and saved your e-mail address, you will be logged off. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to your new e-mail address. By clicking on the link in this e-mail, your registration will be re-activated.
